The South African Astronomical Observatory’s (NRF|SAAO) headquarters are in the Cape Town suburb of Observatory on the site of the former Royal Observatory. The historic building is recognised as a National Heritage Site, and houses administration facilities, offices, and a library.
OPEN NIGHTS
The Observatory welcomes visitors to its Open Nights in Cape Town, held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 20:00.
Each Open Night includes an engaging presentation on a Astronomy/Phyiscs related topic, as well as guided visits to the historic McClean Telescope, the observatory museum, and the library.
Weather permitting, the evening concludes with stargazing sessions using telescopes specially set up for public viewing of the night sky.
Fee: R50 per person, children under 6 enter for free.

NIGHT TOURS
The night tours begin at the Main Building, one of Cape Town’s oldest formal structures, where guests are introduced to the rich history of astronomy in South Africa. The tour then proceeds to the Visitor Centre and Museum, offering visitors further insight into the work and heritage of the Observatory. Guests also have the opportunity to explore the historic McClean Telescope, a highlight of the tour.
Weather permitting, the experience culminates in an unforgettable stargazing session using both the McClean and Dobsonian telescopes.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THE TOURS
Tour fees go towards the NRF|SAAO’s education, public outreach, and socio-economic development programs. Tour bookings must be paid in advance – no payments will be accepted on-site.
This is a secure site and all other buildings are off-limits to the public.
Guests are kindly advised to wear closed-toe shoes and warm clothing when attending the tour. As parts of the experience involve walking between locations, we recommend being prepared for varying weather conditions. In the event of rain, please bring along a raincoat or umbrella to ensure your comfort throughout the tour.
