To test the handset, there is an option in the Calibrate menu (option C) showing you what number should be returned for each keypress. 
At the bottom of the page is the number in bold currently returned (you can go try it out without any harm, even without a handset connected).
Also remember to enable the handset in the Calibrate menu, option 1 (or the Settings menu, option 5).
